New PEFC Notification Scheme
New PEFC Notification Scheme
This month, PEFC UK Ltd will be implementing a new funding mechanism to enable it to better cover its operational and promotional costs. Previously, the only income that PEFC received from its sustainable forest management scheme was that which it charged for the use of the PEFC logo and membership fees.
From the 1st February 2007, all Certification Bodies conducting certifications against PEFC’s chain of custody standard will be required to become PEFC Notified. This notification will enable PEFC UK Ltd to levy a charge for each certificate issued. This charge will be incorporated into certification costs by certifiers. The notification charges will range from £100 per certification for small businesses with an annual turnover of less than £1 million to £750 for large companies with an annual turnover in excess of £100 million. Providing they enter into a logo licensing contract, chain of custody certificate holders will then be able to use the PEFC logo and become members of the organisation at no additional cost.

Logo Usage for non members
The requirements are for forest related industries, (e.g. wood
procurement organisations, wood processing industries, wood
traders, distributors, retailers etc.) as holders of the chain of
custody certificates or participating in a group with a valid chain of
custody certificate (group certification).

The chain of custody certificate shall be issued by an independent
certification body meeting the requirements of Annex 6 (Certification
and Accreditation Procedures) and shall state compliance with Annex 4
(Chain of Custody of Forest Based Products - Requirements) or with
national, regional or sectorial applications approved by the PEFC
Council.
Under group chain of custody certification, participating individual
companies can get individual approval for the usage of the logo. This
requires a license, which has to be obtained from the PEFC Council or
from the PEFC National Governing Body acting on behalf of the PEFC
Council, subject to a written contract with the PEFC Council.
